A Golden Bay farm manager has been convicted after being found guilty of ill-treating cows in his care.

Forty-five-year-old Steven John Wells, a farm manager at Maratoa Farm near Takaka, was convicted of six counts under the Animal Welfare Act after a four-day trial in the Nelson District Court last week.

His offending took place in 2015 and 2016 when he broke the tails of cows, hit them with a metal pipe, kicked them, kneed them, and punched them.

Wells will be sentenced in the Nelson District Court on April 30.
