Matawhero citrus growers John and Sophia Ross won the Supreme Award at First Fresh’s annual “Freshies” awards last week.

The duo dominated the field, winning category awards for mandarins and grapefruit on top of the Supreme honour.

“To me, John and Sophia personify the region’s citrus growers,” First Fresh chief executive Ian Albers said.

“They grow multiple crops, they do most of the work themselves and are passionate about producing the best quality fruit possible.

“The fact that they were nominated for every crop they grow is a testament to their effort,” Albers said.

“This award is incredibly well deserved.”

Best in show category awards were given out for each of the major citrus varieties, as well as persimmons.

Beyond the nine product-specific categories, First Fresh recognised individuals who went the extra mile for the industry.

Marcus Tietjen won Young Grower of the Year; Mike Longley (Advanced Tech Tractor Shop) Service Provider of the Year; Detlef and Jackie Michaelsen (Hawke’s Bay lime growers) the Above and Beyond Award; and Tam Jex-Blake the Outstanding Contribution Award.

Albers said Midway Surf Life Saving Club provided a “stunning venue” for the awards.

“With Young Nick’s Head in the distance, the evening centred on the theme of ‘Keeping it Local’— a tribute to Te Tairāwhiti region’s rich resources and its talented people.

“Hosting this event is the absolute highlight of the year for the First Fresh team. It’s so good to celebrate the hard work and tenacity of our grower-suppliers.”

Looking ahead, he introduced the 2026 mantra: “The Perfect Mix in ‘26.”

“I emphasised a collaborative approach where the First Fresh team and growers work in tandem to navigate market dynamics.

“Also, I reaffirmed my call for continued positivity, noting there is plenty to get excited about in the coming season.”
