Dr Alan Frampton will stand down from the board of Dairy Insight, the sector's industry-good funding agency, in May.
"I've decided it's the appropriate time to step down," said Frampton, who has chaired the board since its first meeting in April 2001. "It is time for other dairy farmers to share
their experience and knowledge and take this organisation into the future."
Frampton will continue as chairman of the Tatua dairy company.
Dairy Insight was established as an independent organisation for funding industry-good research and other activities in the wake of the Dairy Board's deregulation. It has been largely funded by Fonterra, but from May will start levying farmers about $37.7 million for its work.
Frampton said the May election was important and dairy farmers should think carefully about who they wanted to drive the funding body.
"Farmers should be looking for a leader, with an ability to impartially represent all levy-paying members' interests."
