Fonterra has offered to send special supplies of milk powder or infant formula from New Zealand to help Chinese parents safely feed their babies.
The offer comes as the contaminated dairy scandal in China widens to embroil 22 manufacturers, including leading companies such as Mengniu, Yili and Bright
Dairy and Food.
Fonterra, a joint-venture partner in Sanlu, the first Chinese company to be exposed supplying melamine-contaminated dairy products, met Beijing officials this week "to discuss and finalise the most appropriate form of assistance in this crisis".
Trade Minister Phil Goff told the Herald on Sunday that one option he discussed with Fonterra boss Andrew Ferrier on Friday was for a supply of safe infant formula to be sent from New Zealand to the Chinese.
