Firewood is being targeted by thieves in the South as the cold weather begins to bite.

Sergeant Trevor Thomson, of Dunedin, said a "whole lot of scrap timber" was stolen from a back yard of a house in Elderlee St, Milton, on Saturday night.

Entrance to the yard was gained through a side gate, he said.

"If firewood is in a visible place, make sure gates are closed and take all the measures you can to stop people from taking it and report anything suspicious."

A pile of firewood was also stolen from a paddock in Halfway Bush Rd, Dunedin, last Friday night.
