Fire ban in Western Bay of Plenty

The hot, dry conditions have prompted a total fire ban across the Western Bay of Plenty.

The measure banning all outdoor fires kicks in from Friday.

Principal rural fire officer Barry Low said the step was prompted by insignificant rainfall and rising fire danger levels.

He said current fire permits had been revoked, and lighting an outdoor fire for any purpose was now an offence.

Mr Low reminded people to report fires by calling 111.
