The Ministry for Primary Industries has turned away a shipment of possibly contaminated palm kernel extract.

The Ministry for Primary Industries has turned away a shipment of possibly contaminated palm kernel extract.

Federated Farmers is praising the Ministry for Primary Industries for turning away a shipment of possibly contaminated palm kernel extract.

Twenty-three thousand tonnes of it has been sitting on a ship off the coast of Tauranga since early September.

The vessel will not be permitted to discharge its cargo in New Zealand, it was announced today.

Federated Farmers biosecurity spokesman Guy Wigley says it's irresponsible of the importer to persist for so long, in trying to bring in extract that falls short of our biosecurity standards.

He says they're seriously disappointed with the importer, which clearly thought it might get away with it.

The Ministry for Primary Industries initially prevented discharge from the MV Molat after finding some of its cargo had come from an unregistered PKE facility in Malaysia.

Today's decision came after considering an application from the importer to have the palm kernel treated in New Zealand.
