A 76-year-old man has died after a quad bike accident in the Far North.

Police were called to a rural property in Broadwood about 3.55pm after reports a quad bike had crashed.

Hato Hone St John responded with one ambulance. A rescue helicopter also attended.

“Despite the efforts of emergency responders, a 76-year-old man passed away at the scene,” a police spokesperson said.

The Serious Crash Unit attended, and an investigation is under way into the circumstances of the accident.

WorkSafe is also investigating.

A WorkSafe spokesperson said farmers were strongly recommended to install crush protection or rollover protection devices on quad bikes.

“Farm vehicle incidents are one of the top two causes of workplace deaths in Aotearoa, which is why agriculture is a priority sector for WorkSafe.”
