The weaner cattle market remains strong as the rain continues to fall in Hawke's Bay.

Demand at Tuesday's exotic steer fair was more cautious than last year but yesterday's traditional breeds steer fair was as strong as ever as a full rostrum of buyers sought to buy a quality yarding of 1015 head.

Top price this year was $1100 or $3.82/kg paid for a line of 28, 287kg, angus steers from The Dome, Farm Rd, Waipukurau. Last year's top price was $1135 or $4/kg for 32 angus steers from Freethlands, Salisbury Rd.

However, this year's sale had a better average price than last year.

The weaner heifer fair is on Tuesday.
