The Strands of Life - a tree woven from braided stainless steel wire to represent the interwoven patterns of life - has been created by designer David Trubridge for the Hawke's Bay Wine Auction in November.

The work was unveiled at an exclusive Hawke's Bay Wine Auction Sponsor Partnership function last night at the David Trubridge studio in Whakatu, Hastings.

Trubridge entered new territory with the sculpture, using 2.5km of the intransigent material, which branches out like a nikau or punga.

Hawke's Bay Wine Auction Event Manager, Elisha Milmine said the sculpture, which stands 2m high, will make an impressive addition to its home at the winning bidder's property.

"The sculpture is truly stunning. The way the light shines and reflects on the stainless silver strands is mesmerising.

"This event brings together an amazing group of people, we are very grateful for the talent that is residing here in our region – world-class artists, winemakers and food producers. It really is inspiring to be working with many of them," Milmine said.

Steve White, the plant manager for principal auction sponsor WineWorks, said the artwork is "another example of a generous Hawke's Bay contributor to this event for such a great cause".

The auction's pre-tasting event, which starts in October, has already sold out but there are still tickets left for the main auction event in November.

Project manager Annabel Tapley-Smith was hoping for a similar result to previous years, with the past three main events sold out.

"For the last four years we have sold out, which is a testament to the quality of wine auction lot offerings available. With only 100 tickets left, we are hoping for a similar result this year."

In addition to the sculpture, there are 42 lots available, including bespoke, one-off wines from some of the most prestigious wineries in Hawke's Bay, collaborations between winemakers, artists and restaurants, and one travel package.

Details of the lots as well as tickets to the event are available from the website hawkesbaywineauction.co.nz. To follow updates sign up at www.hawkesbaywineauction.co.nz or "like" the Hawke's Bay Wine Auction Facebook page.

The auction will be at 1pm on November 10 at the Napier Conference Centre.
