An excellent offering of pre-lamb shorn types from all wool breeds led to prices finishing on a much firmer note at last week's South Island wool sale.

Strong interest continued for mid-micron and merino wool, reflecting the very strong demand coming from China, PGG Wrightson Wool's South Island sales team said.

Crossbred wools appeared to have "rebounded off the bottom" and drew active bidding from a full bench of buyers.

Better-prepared crossbred wools showing uniformity for length, including oddments, attracted the most interest.Crossbred fleece (31 to 34 micron), including hogget wool, was up 2%-6%, while 35 micron and stronger were  3%-5% dearer.

Crossbred second-shear was 2%-5% dearer, while lamb's wool was up 2%-4% on a very limited offering. Crossbred oddments were 2%-3% dearer.

Roger Fuller, of CP Wool, said some level of confidence was seen back in the market for the first time in months. Passings were the lowest seen for many months.
