'Community event for the whole family' in Lawrence

Following a challenging winter, those involved in the agriculture sector are banding together to host a community afternoon in Lawrence.

Beef and Lamb New Zealand (BLNZ) southern South Island extension manager Olivia Ross said BLNZ, together with the Ministry for Primary Industries, Federated Farmers, industry professionals and support networks, is hosting the afternoon for farmers to come along to catch up with other farmers in similar situations.

''It's a community event for the whole family. It's a way of bringing everyone together while providing advice and support to those who need it following recent weather events in the lead up to lambing and the busier season.''

There will be a children's entertainment area as well as refreshments for young and old and a meal prepared by Southern Fare.

The afternoon will be held on Sunday, August 20 and start at 4pm, with a chance for farmers to talk to one another and chat to any industry professionals if they need any advice, Miss Ross said.

Speakers would offer some words of wisdom before a buffet dinner and the afternoon would finish with a keynote speaker, she said.

Topics being covered would include recovering from slips, other feed options besides grass and crops, tips and tricks at lambing during tight feed times, and reducing risk going forward.

The event will start at 4pm on Sunday, August 20, at Simpson Park Sporting Complex and Function Centre.
