Chatto Creek Hunting Competition brings out sure shots

Mini hunters enjoyed the Chatto Creek Hunting Competition at the weekend.

The night-time hunting was particularly good for Hamish, who killed seven rabbits and two possums.

Chatto Creek Tavern owner Lesley Middlemass said 47 adults and 17 children entered the competition, the biggest number yet.

As well as bringing back kills of fish, deer and boar, one team member had to take part in the pig carrying obstacle course race.

To keep the testosterone in balance, each team was also required to make a banana cake to complete their competition entry.

Tane Russell, of Alexandra, came back with the heaviest red deer, at 89kg, which he hunted at Poolburn.

The junior competition was popular, with 17 children entering, and coming back with rabbit, possum, duck and magpie kills.

All the children were supervised by an adult with a current firearms licence, Mrs Middlemass said.

Everybody was a winner and no-one went away without a prize, she said.
