Cattle remained the bright spot at Stortford Lodge yesterday.

Cattle remained the bright spot at Stortford Lodge yesterday.

Blowtorch winds drying out feed and a lack of buyers saw smaller lambs drop by $5 to $8 at the Stortford Lodge store sale yesterday.

There was a big yarding of longer-term lambs and some of them were hard to sell. Good lambs kept their value but ewes were also discounted.

However, cattle remained the bright spot. A feature of the sale was the 141 yearling heifers which were part of a cancelled Chinese breeding stock export order.

The heifers, mostly Angus, sold very strongly for between $3.18 and $3.59/kg.

Buyers for the more than 600 cattle and more than 4000 sheep came from around Hawke's Bay, Wairarapa, Manawatu, Waikato, South Auckland and one from Christchurch.
