A wandering cattle beast was being blamed yesterday for a truck overturning on State Highway 6 just east of Wanaka.

The driver, who did not want to be named, said cars had stopped on the road because of the animal, and concerned he could not stop, he took "evasive action" which led to his truck, carrying 10 tonnes of roading material, overturning on the verge of the highway at very slow speed.

The animal, he said, leapt into a nearby paddock.
