Over in the far corner of the A&P Showgrounds some seriously big bulls and cows vied for the top prizes in the beef competition at the Dannevirke A&P Show.

There were more than 40 beef entries but no dairy, as most top breeders had been involved all week with Dairy Week competitions.

A wayward beef youngster caused fears of an escape early on in the competition and the grand parade in front of the grandstand was cancelled. All the drama of the award of Supreme Champion occurred in the beef quarters.

Glen Anthony Simmental Stud of Waipukurau swept nearly all of the prizes, winning Supreme Champion for its one-year old bull described by Judge Ben Burgess as capable of winning a competition anywhere in New Zealand.

The stud also won top prize for its two-year-old bull, two-year old heifer, one-year old heifer, heifer calf and bull calf and second in the cow and calf combination.
Owner Tony Thompson said achieving the feat was easier with breeding.
