Beach access stays, farm goes on market

The view that thousands of Northlanders have enjoyed for decades, and can continue to enjoy.

For decades, Northlanders have enjoyed access to a piece of local paradise across a Whangarei Heads farm.

Those familiar with the passage through the Kauri Mountain property's remote farm gate and subsequent trundle across a few hundred metres of paddock to the beach need not worry.

Public access to Kauri Mountain Beach via the farm, 30km east of Whangarei, will stay regardless of who the new owner of the 204ha Whangarei Heads property is.

The property, with a CV of $6.2 million, brackets the northernmost 1.6km of Kauri Mountain Beach.

The last 300m of the beach access is across farmland and gated off, but the Whangarei District Council has provided assurances that this is designated a council road.

Beach access through the gate will continue regardless of the sale, the council says.

A small house on the property is occupied by Whangarei Heads identity Zac Smith. It is understood the property has been in the Smith family for several generations.

The property, under four titles, is being marketed by Bayleys, who describe it as a "coastal gem tucked away at the end of a quiet rural road".

"You are left simply breathless as you arrive at the boundary and get your first glimpse of the Pacific Ocean in the horizon and smell and admire the beautiful mature native bush hugging each side of the drive including large ancient kauri trees," the marketers said.

The property has an ocean vista, and views of the Hen and Chickens and is bordered by 276ha of reserve, further adding to its privacy, Bayleys said.
