John Kirkpatrick last night became the second world champion shearer to win the Hawke's Bay Sportsperson of the Year award in seven years.

Kirkpatrick also added the Gemco senior award to the Hawke's Bay Today/Radio Sport supreme title during the province's annual prize giving night staged at the Pettigrew-Green Arena in Napier.

The 46-year-old from Napier won the individual world title, in his fourth attempt, and was also a member of the winning team at the world shearing championship in Invercargill in February.

Fellow shearer Cam Ferguson, of Waipawa, won the award in 2011.

Kirkpatrick, who returned to work this morning, thanked his whanau and their support for his success.

"I do want to go to France, that's my aim," said Kirkpatrick of his hopes of representing New Zealand in a fifth World Championship in 2019.

Another Olympian and 2015 winner of the premier award, cyclist Regan Gough, won the Lion Foundation junior award.
