Auckland is days away from another controversial 1080 drop.

The council is preparing to drop the poison over the Hunua Ranges and surrounding land, when weather permits.

The last 1080 spray in 2015 successfully eradicated rats and possums, benefiting threatened species like kokako and Hochstetter's frogs.

But councillor Penny Hulse says as expected, pest numbers are starting to rise again.

She says repeating pest control is the best way to ensure the forest and threatened species are protected.
