Cattle numbers have begun to ease as winter approaches.

Cattle numbers are easing as winter gets ever closer. Now into the first week of June the weather has been excellent so far but the bad days are still in front of us. The autumn born feeder calves are slowing down now and the store cattle are also easing.

Wellsford Sale

Wellsford had another good sized yarding of store cattle. Good quality cattle held their value but cross bred cattle eased in value. Good 20 month steers made $1010 to $1135 (2.72c-2.89c) then $890 to $930 (2.69c-3.08c). Weaner steers sold for $720 to $805 (3.41c-4.03c), and small weaner steers made $310 to $505 (2.25c-2.61c). 20 month bulls sold for $1000 to $1135 (2.34c-3.12c) weaner bulls made $300 to $570 (2.03c-3.96c). Weaner heifers fetched $605 to $695 (3.61c-4.55c) then $355 to $485 (2.16c-3.16c).

Tuesday

Another good sale at Wellsford on Tuesday with both cattle and sheep selling well. Prime heifers sold for $1418 to $1533 (2.00c-2.84c).then $783 to $982 (2.00c-2.80c). Heavy bulls sold for $1239 to $1901 (1.96c-2.86c). Heavy prime cows made $970 to $1044 (1.80c-2.00c) then $568 to $779 (1.60c-1.65c).

Sheep

Good prime lambs sold for $110 to $128 then $$100 to $108 to $100. Good store lambs made $95 to $101 then $$91 to $90, down to $58 to $68. Good mixed age ewes make $70 to $98 and wethers $60 to $90. Feeder calves made $190 to $208 and small calves $30 to $90.

Store cattle and feeder calf numbers eased somewhat on Tuesday 30th at Kauri. The store cattle market was a bit mixed with only 47 head, and the feeder calves were firmer with 148 head. 30 month cross bred steers made $1300. 1 year Short Horn steers made $720 down to $455 and weaner steers $440. Hereford cows RWB sold for $485 to $745.

18 month crossbred heifers made $735, 1 year heifers made $500 to $570, Murray Grey heifers fetched $370 to $500 and weaner heifers $475. Good feeder calves made $400 to $460, then $310 to $380, medium calves $220 to $270, light calves $155 to $180 down to $40 to $110.

Sheep

Store lambs made $115, ewes made $80 and ram $35.

Kaikohe Sale

A medium yarding of 500 cattle at Kaikohe on Wednesday 31st saw the good to medium cattle sell on a par with previous weeks but any plain cattle were a bit of a struggle. 30 month steers sold for $1120 to $1235 (2.90c-2.94c). Good 20 month steers made $1200, then White Face and Friesian cross steers made $100 to $1090 (2.60c-2.85c), then $810 to $855 (3.10c-3.31c).

A line up of 80 weaner bulls saw Simmental Angus cross bulls make $740 to $860 (3.80c-4.10c) and beef cross bulls make $640 to $7.20 (3.10c-3.40c) small bulls made $400 to $690 (2.58c-2.96c). Good 20 month Jersey bulls made $830-$870 (2.50c-2.60c). Cows and calves sold for $1670 (4.41c).

Friesian cross 30 month heifers made $800 to $870 (2.30c-2.40c). Good 20 month heifers sold for $945 to $1180 (2.68c-2.74c) down to $720 to $780 (2.32c-2.86c) and weaner heifers $590 to $640 (2.67c-3.00c). Angus Devon cross and Simmental weaner heifers sold for $500 to $560 (3.00c-3.20c).

Heavy empty Friesian cows fetched $1165 (1.78c) down to $1030 (1.88c). In calf nurse cows made $860 to $880 (1.60c-1.80c) down to $720 to $790 (1.61c-1.68c) and light cows $600 to $700 (1.50c-1.60c). Small weaner heifers made $445 to $465 (2.31c-2.81c).

Coleman Farms Ltd. Charolais Bulls held on the Vendors property at Kaikohe. The 2 year bulls sold from $3500 to $5200 and averaged $4250 over all.

Whananaki Coastal Charolais 20th Annual Bull Sale held on the Vendors property. The 2 year bulls sold from $4000 to $6200 and averaged $4675 overall.
