Greenpeace says its activists have dumped three tonnes of wood pellets into a Fonterra coal depot to highlight global warming concerns.

A Fonterra spokesman said he had heard from the site manager of the factory, near Timaru, but was not aware of any disruptions caused by the protest.

Police had
been called to address trespassing, the spokesman said.

Greenpeace said four activists had locked themselves on to equipment to stop coal deliveries.

They were calling on Fonterra to switch to a cleaner fuel source than coal, the organisation said in a statement.

It is streaming live updates and photos of the protest online, at http://greenpeace.gen.nz/live/.
