Cattle have died in a stock truck and trailer that overturned near Tekapo in the central South Island this morning.
Police southern communications Inspector Mike Coulter said the truck braked heavily to avoid a campervan, which was turning in front of it, causing the trailer to overturn.
He said cattlespilled onto the road and some were killed.
The driver was believed to be uninjured.
The incident occurred on State Highway 8, about 5km southwest of Tekapo, about 9am.
