Do you often have to fix mistakes in your business?

Does it feel like you're repeating yourself again and again to your team when it comes to particular areas of your business?

You may need to review your systems and processes.

Good systems play a key part in the success of the day-to-day operation of your business. If these are documented well, they provide a guide for others to follow and because they're written, it means they can be reviewed from time to time for efficiency.

Reviewing your systems often might see opportunities of where new technology can be implemented to further streamline the processes you have in place.

Perhaps though the largest benefit is that written and documented processes allow you to scale your business, that might mean adding more production units or opening a branch in another location.

For example, when we think about franchises, what comes with them is generally the processes and proven methods that guarantee an outcome associated with the brand.

Don't know where to start? I often find that drawing flow charts are the easiest way to begin working on a system or process.

Start by drawing a box and putting the first step of the process into the box. Then draw an arrow to the next and continue from there. Involve your team, they'll be able to help and everyone will get to know more about how that process works.

Some processes are simply about how to use something, basic instructions — they may even be part of a larger process. Some of your more complex processes might be conditional on events with yes and no decisions involved. Be diligent and try to complete them step by step.

While procedures form the method, checklists can form your control point to provide crucial steps or things to note. Tick boxes and sign-off points make sure everything is done and provide some accountability.

So this year, if you're on the path to growth, you're going to have to ensure you have some documented systems and processes in place.
