Northland gave Hawke's Bay a giant in two-metres-tall world champion shearer Rowland Smith.
So it seems only right that Hawke's Bay give two back, as has happened with Napier shearer Phil Wedd's win in the North Kaipara A and P Show open shearing final at Paparoa on Saturday.
His win came hot on the heels of the first two wins for Chris Kyle, also from Napier, who won at the Kaikohe and Warkworth shows on the previous two weekends.
It's been a long time coming for Wedd who once had to make the choice between shearing and turning pro as a golfer.
The rewards in shearing were greater than that of a golfer trying to get into the big-time, and Wedd was not short on potential with the handpiece - finishing sixth in the intermediate event in which eventual multiple open champion and fellow Napier shearer John Kirkpatrick won his first Golden Shears title in 1993.
