Scottish comedian Billy Connolly has charmed fans in Rotorua during a recent three-day break.

The famous funny man was in New Zealand to film the latest Peter Jackson movie The Hobbit.

Staying at the Amora Lake Resort at Okawa Bay, he went fishing with the resort's guide, Doug Allen, on Lake Rotoiti and also had two days' fly fishing with Miles Rushmer's fishing tours.

Amora Lake Resort operations manager Tim Myhre said Connolly went shopping at Hamills in Rotorua where he was approached by people in the store. Mr Myhre said Connolly spent about 20 minutes speaking to fans in the store.

"He was a delightful person, very funny but also very humble. The staff enjoyed his company and he was great with everyone he came in touch with."
