Rotorua woman Alana Mead will face a chilly winter after she lops off her locks to raise money for the Leukaemia and Blood Foundation on Friday.
The 25-year-old will have her head shaved by her local hairdresser during the Seismic Gastrobar's happy hour as part of the national Shave For A
Cure campaign.
"I'm not entirely sure why I've decided to do this, but I want to step way out of my comfort zone," she said.
"I figure that if I can raise some money for an amazing cause in the process, then why not."
Shave for a Cure aims to get 10,000 people to shave their heads - one for each New Zealander living with a blood cancer or condition like leukaemia.
Miss Meade wants to be one of those 10,000 people having their heads shaved and is calling on local businesses and organisations to help.
"It would just be great to raise money for an amazing cause," she said. "Please help me in my bid to support the LBF which helps so many Kiwi families through some of their toughest times."
Seismic Gastrobar owner and operator Mericia Waqanimaravu said Miss Mead had originally approached her with the idea because it corresponded with their "Thank God It's Friday" happy hour. The happy hour is a weekly event that attracts many people and Miss Mead is hoping they'll all pitch in and donate money for the cause.
"We were happy to do it because it's a good cause," said Mrs Waqanimaravu. "We wish her all the best for the winter ahead."
Anyone wishing to sponsor Miss Mead can visit www.shaveforacure.co.nz and click the "sponsor" button. Rotorua locals and tourists and regulars can go along and support her from 5pm.
