Tongariro Alpine Crossing will be fully re-opened on May 8 due to scientists finding the risk of future volcanic activity has dropped to a sufficiently low level.
The track was closed after eruptions at Te Maari Crater in August and November, and was partially re-opened in December.
The Department of Conservation will introduce additional safety measures including increased eruption detection capability, and electronic signboards that can be quickly updated if volcanic unrest increases.
