Rotorua Planet Nomad Backpackers manager Kerry Giles said he had to turn away those who were less organised.
"We have been flat out, crazy. We are always busy at this time of year. I must have sent 30 people away [in one day].
"What people don't realise is that they are coming to Rotorua with thousands of other people," he said.
Waiteti Trout Stream Holiday Park and Backpackers owner Michael Thorne said his operation was the busiest it had been in his 10 years of ownership.
"It is our most successful summer. Our forward bookings are solid, January is looking filled and February and March are filling up quickly for all the statutory breaks.
"The Famously Rotorua campaign has worked really well, people are coming and staying for longer because there is so much to do here. Instead of people staying one or two nights, they can stay three or four."
A large proportion of the Tane family, 33 members, contributed to the excitement at the holiday park.
They made their way from as far afield as Australia for a get-together organised by Wendy and Chris Tane, who said they wanted to create summer holiday memories for their three young daughters.
Chris' parents Louisa and Bill Tane were happy to be with their family, although there were a couple missing, they said.
"We will be coming again next year. It is our first holiday away like this. We have had an awesome time. There are so many places to go to here. I have just been relaxing and enjoying my mokos," Mrs Tane said.
Sport of Kings Motel managers Tristen and Peter Williams said they had been flat out.
"It's been mad, but it's all good, it's amazing. There are lots of people staying, lots of family groups that have taken three or four rooms.
"We have 100 per cent capacity right through to the end of March, and with Crankworx happening it's just crazy."
