Jinny McMahon and Tuiata Clarke have been voted off reality TV show Head Start, leaving one Rotorua woman fighting for the top spot.

Tina Marie Tinirau, 19, is one of two people vying for first place in the hair and beauty competition.

Hosted by Matai Smith, Head Start follows a group of aspiring hair and make-up artists competing for an $18,000 scholarship to New Zealand's premiere hair and make-up school Cut Above Academy.

The winner will also get six weeks' work experience in Maori Television's make-up department and receive a year's supply of Matrix hair care products.

The reality show has also featured Rotorua women Cheyenne Grace, 19, who was eliminated in episode seven, and Renarta Gotz, 27, who did not make it past the auditions.

Mrs McMahon was eliminated on Saturday night while Ms Clarke was eliminated earlier this month.

Although Mrs McMahon was disappointed to leave the show, she said it had been an awesome experience.

"It was a real different experience, it's not every day you would get to do something like that."

She said she had also made a lot of new friends.

Mrs McMahon said seeing herself on television had been weird but it was great for her friends and family who were all really proud of her.

The 30-year-old was already a qualified beautician before starring in the show and has her own part-time business doing make-up for school balls and weddings.

With the beauty side down pat, Mrs McMahon said she was able to concentrate more on the hair side of things.

"I didn't really know a lot about hair so I did learn a lot."

During the show she also got to meet some of New Zealand's top hair, make-up and fashion experts, as well as a few celebrities.

"Every week there was a celebrity judge and someone from the industry."

Her final challenge saw her do hair and make-up for Kiwi actress Siobhan Marshall, better known for her role as Pascalle West in Outrageous Fortune.

After the show, Mrs McMahon hoped more opportunities would open up for her.

"It's something I'd like to do full time."

Exposure from the show had also seen her land a few extra jobs doing weddings.

Mrs McMahon said she wished all the best to the two remaining contestants.

The winner will be announced on Saturday night.
