Toy run geared up to help families

The organisers of the 28th annual Twin City Toy Run being staged tomorrow are hoping for a strong and generous turnout of motorcyclists to help make Christmas a happier time for families who may be finding things a little tough.

"We just ask that they bring a toy or a donation along with them," Alison Black, from Birthright Hawke's Bay, said.

With mainly fine weather forecast she is hopeful the toy run will attract the same good numbers, or more, as last year when more than 200 motorcycles turned out.

Many carried pillion passengers in both human form as well as large fluffy animals.

As has been the tradition in past years, Santa Claus will make the run.

"The Ulysses Motorcycle Club has lined Santa up for us," Mrs Black said.

"They are always great supporters of the toy run."

Riders wanting to take part and do their bit for Birthright clients in the twin cities are asked to assemble in Plunket St, Stortford Lodge, in plenty of time for the planned 11am start.

They will ride through Hastings, Havelock North, Clive and Napier - finishing at Anderson Park in Greenmeadows at about 11.45am for a sausage sizzle and drinks.

The toys and cash donations will help make Christmas brighter for about 400 families.

"It can be a tough time for some families at this time of the year and this really is a great boost."
