Detective Sergeant Darren Pritchard.
A Hastings man who subjected his ex-partner to "a number of serious assault, which were prolonged and caused serious injury", has been jailed for four years.
Regan Reti, 25, appeared in the Hastings District Court yesterday on several charges of assaulting his ex-partner and mother of the couple's three children. He
was jailed for four years.
Detective Sergeant Darren Pritchard, head of the Hastings Family Violence team, said the sentencing sent a very good message to the community that violence towards your partner is a serious crime.
"I want to highlight the incredible courage this victim found to come forward and assist in holding Reti accountable for his actions. She was subjected to a number of serious assaults, which were prolonged and caused serious injuries.
"This jail term should be an example of what can happen if you beat your partner. You will be held accountable for your actions," Mr Pritchard said.
The sentencing was also significant with White Ribbon Day approaching on 25 November. The day is a time to call on all men to take a stand against violence towards women.
Mr Pritchard said together with a number of other agencies, police would be out in force to spread the message that domestic violence is not okay.
"We will also be encouraging victims and offenders of this type of behaviour to come forward and seek assistance from the many agencies in the community that are there to help," Mr Pritchard said.
