Tauranga's Sam Charlton is back in the frame for the 2012 London Olympics after being recalled by Black Sticks coach Mark Hager for the upcoming five-test series against Japan.
Hager has introduced seven newcomers to his squad to play Japan in a five-match series next month.
They are cricket international Sophie Devine (Canterbury), Alana Millington (Northland), Danielle Jones (Auckland), Samantha Charlton (Midlands), Bridget Blackwood (Canterbury), Jan Burrows (Auckland) and Petrea Webster (North Harbour).
With three regular Black Sticks - Krystal Forgesson, Lucy Talbot and Tauranga's Gemma Flynn - returning to Holland to play in the European league, and Kate Mahon and Emily Naylor out due to injury, Hager saw this series as a chance to develop depth ahead of the 2012 London Olympics.
Current Black Stick squad members Jasmin McQuinn and Natasha Fitzsimons have been omitted from the side.
Charlton, 19, is a midfielder who played five tests for the Black Sticks last year. She is currently playing club hockey in Australia but is due back next week.
After the series against world No9 Japan from March 11-17, the Black Sticks will host world No1 Argentina in a three-match test series from March 26-29 as part of preparations for the Champions Trophy in June.
Hager said he would be re-selecting his squad for the Argentina series.
"Over the next few months, we want to provide national and development players with as much international competition as possible, so that we continue to develop player depth and have athletes vying for Olympic selection," he said.
"The players we have named for the Japan series will not be automatically selected for the Argentina series or necessarily included in the national senior squad.
"We will look at how they perform during the series and name a new side for Argentina."
New Zealand are coming off a 5-0 series win over Korea.
"The Japan series provides opportunities for our wider squad while providing a high level of international competition.
"The challenge for the Black Sticks is to continue to improve and show consistency on team and individual playing performances.
"All squad members will be considered when it comes to selecting the side to go to Amsterdam for the Champions Trophy."
New Zealand squad: Kayla Sharland, Katie Glynn, Sally Rutherford, Alana Millington, Amelia Gibson, Ella Gunson, Samantha Charlton, Clarissa Eshuis, Samantha Harrison, Cathryn Finlayson, Anna Thorpe, Laura Douglas, Sophie Devine, Charlotte Harrison, Bianca Russell, Stacey Michelson, Anita Punt, Danielle Jones, Bridget Blackwood, Jan Burrows, Petrea Webster.
Games: Friday, March 11, at North Harbour; Sunday, March 13, at Hamilton; Monday, March 14, at Hamilton; Wednesday, March 16, at North Harbour; Thursday, March 17, at North Harbour.
