Bushy Park future
Bushy Park Sanctuary has a new lessee, Dale Pullen, who aims to provide overnight stays and meals at the homestead 25km from Whanganui. The building is in the process of being renovated. The bush sanctuary has also hosted lots of people studying birds, reptiles and insects and has
completed a winter campaign to drastically reduce the number of mice present. Recent audits there have not detected any rats. The sanctuary's annual general meeting starts at 9.30am on October 27. Attenders will hear about other progress.
Well-being quiz
What does well-being mean to you? Staff from Statistics New Zealand want to quiz a group about this tomorrow, and it's open to more to join.
It's at the Whanganui Quaker Settlement at 76 Virginia Rd, from 4.30 to 6pm. The session will take an hour, then people will be able to provide feedback, either in the group or on post-paid postcards or online.
The information will go toward ways for the new Government to measure well-being. Horizons councillor Nicola Patrick organised the event, and says it's about changing the concept that wellbeing is best measured by increasing gross domestic product (GDP).
"For me, environmental and social cohesion are really important. For others it can be cultural identity, sports and being in the outdoors." Those unable to get to the group can contribute online, at the Statistics New Zealand website.
Gift wrapping
A workshop on October 10 will present alternative ways to wrap and package gifts for the Christmas season. It's put on by Plastic Bag Free Whanganui and Sustainable Whanganui and runs from 10.30 to 12.30 in the Harakeke Room at the Whanganui Resource Recovery Centre. To book go to Sustainable Whanganui's Facebook page or email sustainablewhanganui@gmail.com.
