Buck stops with Bronson - end of story.
That was the happy ending when a cheerful Bronson Stewart rolled into the Chronicle office yesterday brandishing Buck's registration and microchip papers and his Parvovirus innoculation certificate.
Bronson said he's determined to look after his dog and is very grateful he still has Buck to look after.
"His leg is healing very well, and he's just great - he really is."
This month, the plight of Bronson and Buck prompted the SPCA to set up a national trust fund for badly injured animals needing veterinary care.
People from all over New Zealand paid into the fund which totalled more than $4000 two weeks ago.
Buck was hit by a speeding car last month and had a badly broken hind leg. The money to have Buck's leg repaired was out of Bronson's financial reach and he was told by the vet that his dog would have to be put down if he did not pay.
Bronson, a sickness beneficiary, took matters into his own hands and kidnapped his dog from the vet clinic.
As well as as sorting out his beloved dog, Bronson has been dropping his CV off around town this week.
"I really need to get a full-time job - I really want to get a full-time job."
Even though he had had a couple of gardening jobs from elderly people he was keen to get a 40-hour-a-week job.
"My case manager at Winz agrees with me that it's time now to get a full-time job, so I can go off the benefit. So I'll just keep trying."
Bronson said he found it very disturbing that someone had made an allegation about him pocketing donation money for Buck instead of handing it over to the SPCA
"It's just blackening my name for no reason. Not good when I'm trying to get a job, you know."
The police said the allegation was completely unsubstantiated.
And the money that was given directly to Bronson has been spent on food for Buck and is being put towards a kennel.
"You know, the reason I got Buck in the first place was for protection. We lived in a bad area, where guys would climb over our fence in the middle of the night to break in. So you see, even though we've shifted now, a dog is the best security because they bark and warn you."
Happy ending for Buck and Bronson
