Forbidden History is a 340 page glossy paperback authored by John D Aldworth with contributing authors Monica Matamua, Te Upoko Ariki Hori Kupenga Manuka Manuka (George Connolly), Noel Hilliam, Gary Cook, Bryan Mitchell and
Maxwell Hill. As the title suggests, it is a book in which the content reveals aspects of history, our New Zealand history, that have been overlooked or ignored for decades. Subject matter centres to a large extent on the question of original settlement of Aoteraroa New Zealand, the existence and plight of the fair skinned Patupaiarehe people and the Waitaha, and what role Chinese and Portuguese played. A question is posed. Should New Zealand history be rewritten? Rather than a scholarly, technical presentation, the story is told in a rambling narrative which at times is repetitive and hard to follow, but nonetheless brings the reader's attention to numerous anecdotes from historical record and personal experience. Sources range from those varied personal accounts to quotes from Wikipedia, and books covering similar forgotten history. This Forbidden History could be seen then, as a layman's introductory sampler to the question of truth. The format is glossy. The scattered photographs are good quality. The publication is solid, weighing in at 576 grams so if you are flying anywhere taking this with you needs careful consideration.
If you are wanting reading material for the backyard barbecue or camping experience this book could be a welcome asset. Throwing it at any errant intruder, possum, rat or cockroach could undoubtedly do some serious damage. The book will survive and you will have a story to tell around the next campfire or beer.
