The Rotorua Fire Brigade is reminding locals to safely dispose of the ashes when cleaning out fireplaces, after a wheelie bin caught fire.
Fire station officer Tony Kelly said he attended an incident this morning where a plastic wheelie bin had caught fire.
"We want to remind people deciding to
clean out their fireplaces in this cold weather to be careful as ashes can take up to five days to cool."
Mr Kelly said people should always put ashes into a metal bin outside and pour water on them before disposing in the plastic wheelie bin after five days.
