IN BLACK: Harry van der Merwe had to dress in All Blacks gear and sing the New Zealand national anthem after losing a bet. PHOTO/SUPPLIED
He might not have backed the winning team, but Harry van der Merwe keeps his bets.
Which is how the South African came to be standing in the middle of Rotorua's City Focus yesterday singing the New Zealand national anthem and having his nails painted black.
The local financial adviser
made a deal with neighbouring accountant Bevan Dunseath before last weekend's semi-final between the Springboks and the All Blacks. The person who supported the losing team would have to stand in the centre of town, dressed in the opposition's garb, and sing the national anthem of the country.
Mr van der Merwe admits he made the bet feeling confident - "I probably was a bit too confident".
He admitted he was probably more upset about the thought of singing in public than the fact the Springboks didn't make the final. "Last night I couldn't sleep."
