The Australasian music festival Polyfest which was to have been held in Rotorua next week has been cancelled.
The 12-hour music festival was planned for Kuirau Park next Friday and annually for the next five years.
However, it has been announced on the festival's website that "due to a lack of prepaid ticket sales in Brisbane and Rotorua the Polyfest festivals have been cancelled".
Australian-based organiser Dean Harawira said last month that thousands of tickets had already been sold for the Rotorua gig and he encouraged locals to get their tickets fast in case they sold out. He was confident it would be a sell-out. He could not be contacted yesterday.
The 2011 festival was to feature Hawaiian reggae artist JBoog and a Hawaiian six-piece reggae band called Hot Rain plus Kiwi artists, emerging Australian acts and Polynesian-themed stalls.
Administrators of the Polyfest Music Festival Facebook page posted a comment about the lack of ticket sales in Brisbane and Rotorua, prompting 56 responses commenting that there could have been more promotion and advertising.
People who have already bought tickets are being asked to contact info@polyfest.com.au to organise a refund.
