The southern hemisphere's first four-day Wanderlust Festival kicks off in Taupo at the Wairakei Resort hotel next Thursday.

The southern hemisphere's first four-day Wanderlust Festival kicks off in Taupo at the Wairakei Resort hotel next Thursday.

About 8000 people are expected to participate in the four-day music, yoga and wellbeing festival, Wanderlust.

The event starts next Thursday at the Waiarakei Resort in Taupo and will feature a range of activities, speakers, stalls and music, festival director Jonnie Halstead said.

"This is not traditionally a yoga festival, it is a lifestyle festival targeting a mainstream audience who are looking for inspiration to live more mindfully.

"There is a sustainable environmental side of it, meditation and finding that quiet space, food, art appreciation, organic wines and craft beer, premium sustainable beauty products. It's about reconnecting with nature which is why we chose Taupo," he said.

The Wanderlust Festival began in California and Great Lake Taupo is the first festival location outside America and Canada. "It started there [America] in 2009 and they identified New Zealand and Australia as the next frontier for them. Kiwis and Aussies, we are pretty open-minded people," he said.

The line-up did not include any local talent, something Mr Halstead wanted to move towards, but it would still have community input.

Waiarakei Resort general manager Kathy Guy was excited to host the event.

"It's wonderful for Taupo because it has generated accommodation and obviously there will be an economic spin-off from all the people attending," she said.

Mr Halstead welcomed the public to check the festival out.

"If locals want to check it out during the day the open stages, the market places and all the outdoor activities are free and open to the public. Just park at the Tongariro Domain and catch the Wanderbus out to Waiarakei."
