Normally piles of poo wouldn't be deemed much of a birthday gift. But the Rotorua District Council is giving the stuff away to celebrate the city's 125th birthday.
The council promises its human compost is genuine gardener's gold. It is produced from processed bio-solids at the city's wastewater treatment plant
and according to the council's utilities plant manager Andy Bainbridge, is very rich in nutrients and perfect for use in the garden and on lawns.
It's safe, odourless, grade-A compost and its free to all Rotorua residents.
Anyone with a trailer or open deck vehicle will be able to collect a front-end loader cubic metre load of it from the council's wastewater treatment plant on Te Ngae Rd tomorrow between 8am and 4pm.
Also free tomorrow to celebrate the founding of Rotorua 125 years ago are central city parking, books and CDs from the library, entry to the Aquatic Centre and entry to the landfill for domestic rubbish.
