Fiona Adams is sick of rising petrol prices.
The Rotorua woman is selling her gas-guzzling car to buy something more fuel efficient.
Mrs Adams says she drives her Honda, which has a 2 litre engine, several times a day.
"We live in Western Heights and I have to take the kids to school
and go to work each day," she said.
"I have been thinking about getting a car with a smaller engine for about a year now."
She said rising petrol costs was the main reason for her decision.
"It is just getting too expensive."
Mrs Adams said she couldn't afford to fill up her car with petrol because it was too expensive.
"I just put in however much I can afford."
She said she was putting her car on auction website Trade Me and would be buying a more economic car from her sister.
"Its a 1.1 litre engine so it should be much easier on the pocket," she said.
Another Rotorua motorist, Susan McLachlan said she had recently traded in her bigger engined car for something more economical.
"The car is actually bigger but the engine is much smaller. The price of petrol was a big factor in getting a new car."
Mrs McLachlan lives in Hamurana and said several other residents were cutting down on their trips in to town to save petrol.
"It is affecting everyone."
Frances Vooght said she was looking at downsizing her car because of petrol costs.
"Petrol is so expensive. I haven't been able to afford to fill up my car for about six months now," she said. "I would love to be able to get a car with a smaller engine so it is more economical."
