An inquest into the death of a Tokoroa forestry worker is being heard in Rotorua today.

George Mahanga died while working in Kinleith Forest, Tokoroa, on March 6, 2012.

The inquest is part of a joint inquiry in Rotorua focusing on eight workers who died while working in New Zealand forests in 2012 and 2013.

Mr Mahanga's case is the fourth Coroner Dr Wallace Bain has now heard evidence from, following that of 63-year-old father of four David Charles Beamsley, held last week.

So far, the court has heard from two of the five witnesses.

One witness, who had worked with Mr Mahanga for about 10 years, said he was a competent worker.

"He was competent in everything he did. He was outspoken too and always spoke out or asked questions if there were any issues."

Evidence will be heard today and is expected to continue tomorrow morning.
