Wendy's Old Fashioned Hamburgers is coming to Rotorua, creating up to 40 new jobs.
Construction of the restaurant has started at the corner site on Maisey Pl and Fairy Springs Rd after resource consent was granted by the Rotorua District Council.
Project manager Kevin Bain, of Auckland-based company Dominion Constructors, was at
the site yesterday and told The Daily Post they started work on the construction on February 28.
The foundations and underfloor piping had been completed and work on the restaurant was to begin on Monday.
Construction was expected to take 16 to 17 weeks, Mr Bain said.
Wendy's marketing manager Fay Stretch said the chain hoped to open the Rotorua outlet in the next four months and would need a crew of between 30 and 40 staff and three or four managers.
Positions would be advertised six weeks before the restaurant opened.
Ms Stretch said Wendy's was thrilled to be opening a restaurant in Rotorua.
"We've been wanting to come to Rotorua for a long time. It was a matter of finding the right site."
Wendy's already has 15 restaurants in New Zealand, many of them in Auckland.
The closest Wendy's to Rotorua is at Tauranga's Gate Pa which employs 24 people.
Ms Stretch said the Rotorua restaurant would be similar to others, although the interior would have a more contemporary feel compared to those in Auckland where the company was based.
Ms Stretch said there was a lot of demand for a Wendy's restaurant in Rotorua and the search for a site had taken two years.
Rotorua District Council planning services manager, Tracey May, said Wendy's had applied for resource consent last year on August 30 and it was granted on September 23.
The resource consent was subject to conditions and this week Wendy's had sought a variation around design issues, which Ms May said would be processed within 20 days.
The 2022sq m site would include a restaurant with seating for 65 people, a drive-through and a car park for 20 vehicles.
Access to the restaurant would be off Maisey Pl.
Ms May said there had been no opposition to Wendy's plans. However, the site was in an industrial zone so neighbouring properties did not have to be notified.
"This kind of activity is appropriate for that site."
She said there were conditions required by the New Zealand Transport Agency which had been approved.
Outlets of Burger King and McDonald's are a short distance from the Wendy's site.
McDonald's owner Rob Parry said it would be foolish to say there would be no impact on his business but he was confident that his restaurant would still "present the best offering in town".
Mr Parry said a plan to "make it a bit harder" for Wendy's was being formed.
He said McDonald's was locally owned while Wendy's was not and would be a managed store.
"Our hope is that our customers will support a local business."
