A former compulsive gambler is making inroads at attempts to start Gambling Anonymous in Whangarei to help gamblers stay off the habit.
Bill Gray, 61, who spent four decades addicted to gambling, recently moved from Auckland to Whangarei - about a year after he sought counselling to quit his addiction. He has contacted individuals and organisations willing to support.
He's organised a meeting at the Old Town Hall on Bank St from 10am on Monday and expects to see a handful of people, including Nga Manga Puriri gambling services programme manager Marino Murphy.
"Numbers don't bother me. What I want to see is people turning up and speaking about gambling."
He had achieved his goal of getting people on board even though the numbers were low. He had been to similar meetings in Auckland where only two people have turned up.
