Napier Constables Kevin Rooney and Dean Lyall realised they were on to something yesterday when they saw a man acting suspiciously around parked cars, but a subsequent arrest failed to bring a smile of satisfaction to Mr Rooney's face.
It turned out it was the officer's car the offender had smashed
his way into.
"He was not best pleased," was how Senior Sergeant Dan Foley summed up Mr Rooney's mood as the officers applied the handcuffs and took stock of the situation.
The irony was further compounded by the fact both Constables are members of the designated law enforcement team which targets thefts from cars and car conversion.
The Constables had been driving along Munroe St just after 11.30am yesterday when they spotted a man "known to police".
He was seen walking into the old railway land car parking area, a popular parking spot for people working in the city and police officers who only have a short walk to work from there.
Mr Lyall took up a surveillance position at the bus station end of the parking area while Mr Rooney made his way to the CBD end.
"It was clear he was up to no good," Mr Foley said. "He was looking into cars."
Mr Lyall left Mr Rooney at the scene and drove to the station to pick up another officer.
As they returned they heard a stunned Mr Rooney declare "Hey! he's breaking into my car!"
The officers closed in and caught the man behind the wheel. He was arrested and charged with attempted unlawful taking of a motor vehicle.
Mr Rooney could only shake his head at the damaged door lock, smashed dashboard and broken ignition in his stationwagon.
He faces a repair bill of several hundred dollars.
"There were hundreds of cars parked down there - and of all the cars to break into it was the one belonging to the guy who was watching him," Mr Foley said.
Thefts from cars, and attempted theft of cars, were a daily occurrence across Hawke's Bay.
"Every morning we get reports of cars broken into," he said.
Police urged anyone seeing people loitering around cars, or acting suspiciously, any time of the day or night, to call them.
* Unemployed Napier man John Cleary Hotai, 27, was charged indictably with theft of a motor vehicle and unlawful possession of a screwdriver for the purpose of taking a motor vehicle. He entered no plea before Judge Bridget Mackintosh in Napier District Court yesterday and was remanded in custody to appear on October 7.
