Napier police are looking for a man whose thirst for a drink led him to snatch two cases of beer from a supermarket display and bolt for the door yesterday.
A woman customer at the Countdown Carlyle St said it appeared the man had a child with him - the youngster could be heard running after him yelling "wait for me!" as he sprinted toward a car parked nearby.
She saw the man initially walking casually with cases of Tui and DB Export beer he had picked up - but then "he bolted" and made a dash for the entrance doors.
He struggled to get out through one-way barriers at the entrance - jumping from side to side to get around the sprung barrier bars.
A Countdown spokesman said the man gave his legs "a hammering" trying to get out and was likely to have bruising. He understood the man then handed the beer to a second person waiting in the foyer after struggling to breach the barriers. They both then ran off. The incident happened about 12.20pm.
Sergeant Eion Evans said witnesses saw one of the pair get into what they described as a black Mitsubishi car - possibly a Diamante model.
The beer snatcher was described as Maori or Polynesian, in his mid-20s and of medium build. He was wearing a black cap.
"We want to hear from anyone who may know of this person - he may have boasted to someone how he got the beer."
Calls can be made to Napier Police on 831 0700 or anonymously to Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.
