Newly bald Callum Kennedy is feeling the cold a lot more than usual this winter.
He lost five years of growth earlier this month, when he bravely let his karate sensei, Virgil Troy, shave off his mid-chest-length hair for charity.
The 16-year-old spent the last couple of months on the mission to
raise money for the Leukaemia & Blood Foundation's Shave For A Cure campaign. He dropped fliers around his neighbourhood, Hawke's Bay Hospital and used Facebook to spread the word. He raised nearly $1500 for his efforts and donated the hair to a wig company.
Callum said he was nervous going into the shave. "I haven't had a hair cut in five years, and I haven't had it this short, ever. I've come to terms with it now, but it's very cold," he said. The Havelock North High School student wasn't yet sure if he'd go back to having long hair. "I'll just focus on getting it to a No1 length," he said.
