THE large number of patients presenting at Gisborne Hospital and the high bed occupancy rate explains why Hauora Tairawhiti just missed achieving the Government’s emergency department (ED) health target, says chief executive Jim Green.

The target is that 95 percent of patients will be admitted, discharged, or transferred from an emergency department within six hours.

Hauora Tairawhiti achieved 94 percent in July.

Mr Green said the high level of triage 4 and 5 presentations (the two least urgent triage clarifications) was also indicative of the pressure primary care providers were under.

Elective surgery discharges were above target at 102.2 percent or four discharges above the target of 177.

Mr Green said the number of surgeries in the month, 181, was down from 231 in June because of an increase in acute presentations.

The target for helping smokers to quit was achieved.

The target is that 90 percent of primary health organisation-enrolled patients and of pregnant women are offered help to quit smoking.

The hospital achieved 95 percent and PHOs 91 percent.

Only 75 percent of patients received their first cancer treatment (or other management) within 62 days of being referred with a high suspicion of cancer.

The target is 90 percent.

Mr Green said one person did not meet the target because of delays with diagnostic tests in Hamilton.

It was the first time in 10 months that a lung cancer patient had missed the target, said Mr Green.

The health board is still struggling with the immunisation health target, which is that 95 percent of eight-month-olds will have their primary course of immunisation (6 weeks, 3 months and 5 months immunisation events) on time.

Hauora Tairawhiti achieved 82 percent, down slightly from June.

There is a new Raising Healthy Kids health target, which states that by December, 95 percent of obese children identified in the B4 School Check programme will be offered a referral to a health professional for clinical assessment and family-based nutrition, activity and lifestyle interventions.

The Tairawhiti figure for July was 74 percent.

Mr Green said he was confident of reaching the target by December.
