Rotorua residents are jumping at the chance to show some good old-fashioned Kiwi hospitality by opening their homes to Lions fans needing a place to sleep.

A Facebook page called Adopt a Lions Fan has been set up to offer free accommodation to British and Irish visitors with nowhere to stay.

For weeks Rotorua's accommodation has been booked out for tonight, but those still needing somewhere to crash for the night are finding plenty of friendly locals willing to help.

Rachael Teka will have at least eight strangers at her house, including five Lions fans in a campervan in her driveway, a Scottish couple in her son's bedroom and an English fan on her sofa.

The solo mum said her 19-year-old son would be at home but her 9-year-old son would spend the night at a friend's house, allowing her to use his room.

"I have told them my home is yours while you are here but please respect it."

The young men in the campervan arrived Thursday night and had been having a fantastic time.

"They are really friendly and nice," she said.

Miss Teka said she was happy to put up more people if they didn't mind sleeping on recliners. She said her home was perfect because it was only a 10-minute walk to the stadium.

"I'm not charging but I guess I'd take donations but no worries if not. I just like to meet new people."

Stevie Ward, 25, said she and her boyfriend and best friend had offered their flat's spare bedroom with two single beds. She was also offering a ride to the game and a cooked breakfast the next day.

The offer has been taken up by two fans arriving today. "I've had heaps of people message me but I've only got two beds."

She said they were of the age when they would soon head overseas themselves and hoped someday someone would return the favour.

"I'd be blown away if we were travelling and someone offered the same thing to us. What goes around comes around."

The Facebook page information said for a lot of the fans, the prices for accommodation was putting it beyond their reach, or the cities hosting the matches had no rooms left.

"We are not wanting the hosts to charge for any accommodation, but simply to do some old-fashioned billeting, and we are sure you'll make some friends for life by doing this," the Facebook page said.

"We are hoping that Kiwis will get into the spirit of this, and show the world just why New Zealand is the rugby capital of the world."
