A team of specialists was in Whanganui this week checking that the cable feeding internet access to the district was secure.

The team from Seaworks consisted of divers and surveyors who carried out a detailed examination of the Aqualink fibre cable.

The cable - which is the diameter of a 50 cent coin and has a one terabit capacity - supplies internet access to Whanganui. It comes ashore at Whanganui from 1.4km out to sea, and also makes in other centres such as New Plymouth and Paraparaumu.

Survey work on the cable happens every three years. It can only happen when the sea conditions are calm.

Seaworks carries out the work on behalf of Vodafone.
